Eugenio Fizzotti was born in Caserta the 1st of July, 1946. He studied with Viktor E. Frankl at the University of Vienna during the year 1969-1970.
After taking a Doctorate in Philosophy (1970) he spent several years teaching history and philosophy in the high school and dedicating himself to the pastoral activity in Southern Italy (Locri, Soverato). Member of the Salesian Congregation since 1965, he was ordained priest by Pope Paul VI the 29th of June, 1975.
Since 1986 he has been professor of Psychology of Religion at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome, keeping the office of Head of the Institute of Psychology from 1994 to 2001 and assuming the charge of Dean of the Department of Sciences of Education in the year 2001-2002.
He has been editor-in-chief of the journals "Orientamenti pedagogici" and "Psicologia, psicoterapia e salute", permanent member of the Ethics Commission of the Regional Psychological Association of Lazio, and invited lecturer at the Pontifical Faculty of Sciences of Education "Auxilium", the LUMSA University in Rome, the Pontifical "Antonianum" University, the Religious Sciences Institute of Urbino, and many other academic institutions.
He translated and edited almost all the italian versions of Viktor Frankl's books, and dedicated entirely his scientific work to the study and promotion of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis, estanblishing himself as one of the foremost authorities in this field. He participated as invited speaker in international congresses and conferences in Austria, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic, Lichtenstein, Argentina, Mexico, Brasil, Venezuela, Colombia, Honduras.
Co-founder of the Viktor-Frankl-Institut in Vienna and editor (with Alexander Batthyany and Karlheinz Biller) of the Collected Works by Viktor Frankl, Eugenio Fizzotti founded in 1992 the Italian Association of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis (A.L.Æ.F.), serving as President until 2012. In 1999 he founded the journal "Attualità in logoterapia", which since 2003 is edited under the name "Ricerca di senso" and published by the Centro Studi Erickson (Trento).
For his outstanding contribute to humanistic meaning-oriented psychotherapy, Fizzotti received the 2002 Grand Award by the Viktor Frankl Foundation of the City of Vienna. The ceremony was celebrated in April 2005, on the 100th anniversary of Viktor Frankl's birthdate.
After long and severe disease, which took him away from all what he loved most, Eugenio died in Salerno, the 25th of June, 2018. His memory remains alive in the heart of his disciples and those who had the chance to meet him and enjoy his intellectual and human qualities. Thanks to his tireless work, his passion will impress a trace in the future generations of logotherapists, in Italy and all over the world.
